Bāla Ramanar - A pencil sketch

A pencil sketch of young Venkataraman at Tiruvannamalai, known better as Ramana Maharishi.

At a tender age of 16, the Boy attained enlightenment by means of self-enquiry - a simple method of pondering 'who am I?'. Many who had visited Him in His Ashram remark that His mere presence radiates such bliss that one's mind becomes still and there is nothing else around but just peace!

This great Being walked among us less than a century ago. And, it is because of the great souls like Sri Ramana Maharishi incarnate on Earth, commoners like us are reassured of the presence of the Divine.

  1. He was the one who was revered by Kanchi Periyava Himself.

  2. The pencil sketch is excellent, exact resemblance-thathroopam. Unless one has the image deeply imprinted in mind, it cannot be brought into picture exactly like this. Good try. I would like to share some incidents which my father told me about Bhagavan, Sri Ramana Maharishi. My father worked in Revenue department in North Arcot district. Hence he had the opportunity to visit Ramanashram frequently. He said, 'Silence is His true upadesa'. Kanchi Paramacharya, and Ramana Maharishis are contemporaries. Both knew each other and revered each other but, they have never met. When Ramana Maharishi's mother attained mukthi (liberation), after performing rites and rituals, the mortal remains of the mother were buried near Pallitheertham. The ashram was shifted to the buried place. A temple was also constructed over the mother's samadhi. The consecration of the temple, Mathrubhootheswarar was performed later in the presence of great saints like Sankaracharya of Puri. Adjoining Mathrubhootheswarar temple a large hall was constructed which came to be known as Ramanashramam. Kanchi Paramacharya did not recognize the temple constructed over mother's samadhi as a shrine of sanctity and divinity. Sri Ramana maharishi learnt about it. He remained quiet and unmoved. After this, Paramacharya visited Thiruvannamalai and made Giri Pradhakshinam (circumambulation of the of Arunachala mountain. My father and some of his colleagues also went to Thiruvannamalai to have paramacharya's darshan. Ramanashramam lies in the Pradhakshinam route. Ramana Bhagawan knew Periyava's views about the sanctity of the Ashram and that He would not enter the ashram. Hence, he neither invited Periyava to the ashram, nor did he come out to see him. However, he told his disciples to see Periyava at the gate of the ashramam and pay their obeisance to Him. My father said, when Periyava reached the particular spot, he stood for a while, turned towards the entrance of the ashram, stopped for a few seconds, looked and continued to walk along the Pradhakshinam route. But, it seemed that, later he changed his views about the sanctity at the mother's temple, at Ramanashramam and seemed to have said that, after the Kumbabhishekam was conductedin 1949by strictly adhereing to Agama Sastras, the temple has attained the sanctity and sacredness. He also seemed to have advised his disciples to go to the temple as a pilgrimage.
